We met Justin
on the Broadway bridge, he has a unique sense of balance, not only did he ride down the
rail of the bridge, but back up the other side!

Tuesday Night Skate Hit
the Streets!

Story: Michelle Dennis
Last night, there were 7 skaters fortunate
enough to have time in there busy schedules to celebrate the grand opening of Tuesday
night spring skating. We met under blue skies and low sun at the Salmon Street Fountain on
the Waterfront. Knowing we had to take advantage of remaining sunlight, we crossed the
Hawthorne Bridge to the Eastside Esplanade where we hugged the Willamette to the ramp at
the Steel Bridge. That's where we said good-bye to newcomer, Keith, who came all the way
from Hillsboro to squeeze in only an hour.
Up the ramp to the Rose Garden where we skated the parking garage to the top and bottom,
then, at Charley's suggestion we skated the Broadway Bridge.
At the Lovejoy ramp, the one that's temporarily closed to cars on the West side of the
Broadway Br, we paused to take pictures. We sat on 8" wide guard rails, 4' high, to
pose when up ride these two bicyclists who proceeded to set their bikes up on the rail at
the top of the ramp, and ride them down to the street at the bottom of the ramp! Nancy was
so impressed she must have taken a roll's worth of shots of these cyclists. Then- get
this, they mounted the rail again at the bottom and rode all the way to the top again. We
cheered and hollered.
Next we scooted back to the Eastside Esplanade via the Steel Bridge, said good-bye to Lee
(who got to warm up his skates after a leg injury last year) at his car, and back to the
fountain via the Hawthorne Bridge. Again, at Charley's suggestion, the remaining group
agreed to meet up at the Buffalo Gap for some live music, oyster shooters and beers. We
picked up a bicyclist on the way, Aimee missed the beginning of the skate, but caught us
on her bike instead!
Thank you to all the rest who made the skate great: Sean, Maria and Bryn.
I hope to catch up with more skaters as the season heats up. Cheers, and Roll On!
Ciao,
Michelle
